Shwe Sa Bwe Fine Dining Restaurant and Culinary School in Yangon

One of the places we tried during my trip to Yangon last year was Shwe Sa Bwe, a fine dining culinary school, which is run by local Burmese students who work for free under the supervision of their teachers so they can hone their craft in the hospitality field. In other words, Shwe Sa Bwe gets free labor, in exchange for teaching the students who can't afford to go to culinary school using their own means.

Ambiance-wise, like most fine dining places I've tried in Yangon, the place is a nice newly renovated old house where you can still enjoy it's local charm.

But I don't recall being overwhelmed with the food. The have a 3 course menu that changes every 2 for 39,000 Kyats, which is a little less than US$30, or a 2 course menu for 35,000 Kyats, so for the small difference, it makes more sense to order 3 courses.

They give you an amuse bouche for free.

I may just have made not so good choices.
I got lentil soup which was just ok.

Then I got the veal with biryani. I found the veal good, but I think it was
a wrong decision to order something which looked very similar to my starter.

I think they can improve on their menu options so the customer doesn't end up making choices that I did, or maybe I'm the only one who minds because I am weird that way.

I must say dessert was the definite highlight and I'm glad I sort of convinced everyone to order different things so we could try everything.

Sticky toffee pudding

Strawberry Tart and Raspberry Sorbet

Passion of Persimmon
But I must say, it was the poached pear with
Toblerone Sauce tat was truly outstanding.
They end the meal with a bite of chocolate mousse for dessert,
again for free.

I remember I also loved the bread and we kept asking for more. Hahaha, which turns out they buy from L'Opera, which you can ready about here. Over-all, I think the concept is great, I just wish they come up with a more memorable menu in the future. just saying.

Ebeneezer's Revisited and Discovering new favorites

We used to go to Hong Kong every June, because Sof and I used to enjoy the same June 24 Holiday. Me because our office used to be located in Manila, and the 24th of June is Manila Day, Sof because there are no classes for San Juan on the 24th of June because they celebrate the feast of St. John the Baptist with a Water Festival and they wet anyone walking around San Juan on this day (exaggeration of course).

Good thing, we had more than our fill of Hong Kong when we went for Timmy's birthday and I celebrated my birthday there. Among our favorites (first meal always in fact, since we arrive around midnight) is Ebeneezer's! Though this time around we happened to discover new favorites.

The Roast Lamb on fries, Hummus and Garlic Roti are
all clear winners.

Actually anything with their flavorful lamb and green sauce is a winner.
The fries just make them so much better.

We asked them to set aside a few fries without topping for
Fi but they generously gave her one whole order for free.

Van who allegedly wasn't hungry still managed for finish the Roast Lamb
with Rice, and he didn't even offer us! Hahaha.

I think the hummus and breads are all new to the menu.

The Garlic Butter Naan was yummy too. Good thing we decided to add
this, because it was still all gone even if it arrived much later.

Good job Ebeneezer's with your menu expansion. Also loving your new bigger and brighter location on Prat. just saying.

KL eats

Been several months since I was last in KL, but since I'm cleaning my To Blog About folder, here are some places I tried and enjoyed the last time I was there for work.

SOULed Out
The place was semi-outdoor/ open air serving a fusion of western and local dishes.

Carbonara and the giant bread stick
***oops, I didn't realize I had no photos of the other dishes we tried.

Dessert to share
The team after a hard day's work.

Wondermama
I loved the old school/ retro feel of this local restaurant.

I'm not really sure what we ordered but we had a Laksa to share, some fried rice and toppings, fried squid rings and a deconstructed local noodle dish that was really good.
This is the deconstructed noodle dish that is so yummy.
The broth is on the sour side, and it comes with fried
chicken bits and scrambled egg.
The plum iced tea is good.
This is what I mean by old school. Complete
with iced gems. Blast from the past in a charming way.

Paramount Hawker
Then I also got to try where the locals eat, with yummy Char Kway Teow, Beef Noodle and some rice rolls. Unfortunately there were just 2 of us so we couldn't order more.

Now I know the secret to eating well in Malaysia is similar to India. Your friends need to take you to places they know you'll like. Such a big difference when we had to fend for ourselves when we went for an audit, but we may not have been very welcome. Thanks Jul for always feeding me well. just saying.

Brunch Society in Yangon

One of my must visit places in Yangon, si Bogyoke Market to shop for jewels. You can read my post on that here. But since surprisingly traffic is really bad in Yangon, and shops at Bogyoke normally close early, our friends recommend that it would be best to eat a late lunch nearby before we go to the Market to shop.

The place they recommended near the Bogyoke Market is Brunch Society and we really enjoyed it.
Unfortunately, I only have very little photos, but you can take my word for it.

Salad and Bacon Mushroom Skewers to start

I ordered Eggs Benedict, my favorite order for brunch, but this one was a bit
weird with the onions and pepper that topped the sauce.

What I remember though is their three course lunch sets were really good value that came out to around US$12 per person. Order the Risotto, Seabass and the Burger. I remember bumming food from other people that was really yummy, I can't wait to go back so I can order the good stuff for myself, before shopping at Bogyoke market of course. just saying.

Kam's Roast in Singapore

I've heard about Kam's Roast, but ironically, I tried it in Singapore, and not Hong Kong, where it originates from, and due to some import regulations, they are only allowed to sell Roast Duck in Singapore.
Fine with me. I love Roast Duck.

Kam's Roast in Singapore is at Pacific Plaza on Scott's Road.
There normally is a queue for lunch, but good thing my friend Anson arrived
earlier enough to queue for us and secure our table.
Anson ordered the soup, which he loves in Hong Kong, but I wasn't
really a fan.
We also ordered BBQ Pork Char Siew, which I found ok.
It was so fat, though, I had to scrape it off while leaving the yummy
caramelized stuff.

Now the duck... this I really enjoyed. Especially since you can ask for the
Ginger Sauce that they serve in HK Roast places.

I haven't really decided if I prefer this to London Fat Duck, but I guess it doesn't really matter. I can just go to the more convenient one, but next time I will just order the duck.

Thanks Anson for introducing me to another great discovery in Singapore (and for lining up for us too while I was busy getting lost). just saying.
