Palaces, palaces and more palaces in Seoul

I had a deal with my friend... I agreed to visit one palace. Then we were supposed to shop. After I bought something, we could do another palace again. You get the drift, it was a deal that we were going to take turns and all that.

However, for some reason, we ended up visiting one palace after another (and by default because I pointed the wrong palace to the cab driver) another.

As a tourist who does not speak the language, getting around is not that easy in Korea. But if you're armed with good advice from the concierge, and a good map, you can normally just hop in taxi (they are very cheap in Korea compared to Singapore if you jump into any other color except for the black cabs which cost double) and point to the place on the map that you want to go to. The subway is also pretty easy to navigate. It's just hard to walk with the freezing wind so it becomes easier to just take a cab since it's not expensive.

Korea is also one of the places where entrance fees to the palaces are very cheap.
Our first stop was Gyeongbokgung Palace because it's on a lot of Top Things to Do in Seoul lists. Admission Fee is KRW3,000 (SG$3.50 or Php120). Train stop: Gyeongbokgung. My friend wanted to go on a palace tour and we agreed to come along because the tours were free. The one we took with the English speaking guide was at 11:00am. We just sort of walked with the crowd, took our own pictures, then ran after them until we gave up halfway through the tour and decided it was time to move on to the next palace.

Here are some of my pictures of Gyeongbokgung Palace:
Entrance to the Palace
It's right beside the mountains. It was freezing!
I love the detail on the roof
We came too early for spring... Booo!
They were practicing for some event.
The beautiful lake.
This is the tour group we joined and abandoned.
Almost too tall for this door way.
More under the roof shots.
They were still practicing after our tour.
This guy has the cushy job.
Check out how strong the wind is. The umbrella is being blown away.

Our next stop was Changdeokgung Palace which includes the famous Secret Garden. The lady at the information booth discouraged us from taking a taxi and gave us instructions to take the bus instead, but I guess that got lost in translation because we could not find the bus stop, and when we asked the police where we could take a cab, he told us to just stick our hands out. Hahaha.

We ended up at Changgyeonggung Palace instead because I pointed to the wrong place on the map. It looked all the same to me. Hahaha... yes, both in the map and the actual palaces. Entrance to the Changgyeonggung Palace was even cheaper, it was only KRW1,000 (just a little over SG$1 or around Php40).

This palace was not as well preserved as the first one.
Too early for Sakura (Cherry Blossoms)
You can really see the difference of the rooms that were not restored.
This is a room from the first palace for comparison.

You can walk through Changgyeonggung Palace to get to Changdeokgung Palace. Entrance fee: another KRW3,000. Train Stop: Anguk. Entrance to the secret garden is another KRW5,000 but you're required to join a tour and we did not want to wait two hours to join one so I happily gave it up. We were concerned more about getting a group picture since this was the last palace we were visiting this trip.

This was the peg.
This is what we got.

My camera's self timer was so much better.
I think this was where the coronation used to happen.

The post on palaces in Seoul ends here, but Insadong, the traditonal market with Souvenir stores, Art Galleries and Antique Stores is probably a 10min walk away. Abangan and Susunod na Kabata. (wait for the next chapter)

I am so sleepy again. If you are travelling to Seoul and you want more details, just drop me a line. :)

A Taste of Seoul

It's my first time to visit Seoul and I like it. It reminds me a bit of Japan and a bit of China as well, but despite that, there's something distinctly Korean about it. Since I am only here for a week, for work again so our days are fully packed with back to back to back meetings, we planned our flight to arrive at 6am so we could have the full day of Sunday to explore. While in theory this is a good plan, the hotel did not have rooms available for us when we checked-in so we were forced to go sightseeing directly post a 7 hour overnight flight. We were actually able to see soooo much, except that I feel like a Zombie AGAIN!!!

Here's a teaser of our day, with the details to follow, once I've caught enough ZZZzzzzz's!

We visited NOT only one...
NOT only two...
but THREE palaces!!! and they all looked the same. Hahaha.
When we arrived at the airport, I was decked out in my marshmallow jacket and UGG-like boots,
but it was deceptively sunny so I changed into tights and my mini skirt. BIG MISTAKE.
The wind was so strong I was freezing!!!
We stuffed our faces with all the interesting looking street food...
because we were dying of hunger from palace overload!
We finally found a nice cozy restaurant with a mainly local clientele.
It was the best Bulgogi I ever had.
I didn't even realize that I love Korean food.
We attempted to go shopping in the traditional street market with antique and souvenir stores.
Not my cup of tea.
We also went to the day market, but it was a cross between  Greenhills and Pratuman (not in a good way)
We found a Daiso Store and loads of seaweed wholesalers.
The sad part is that's the bulk of my shopping. Boooo.
The only non edible things I bought were these.
Not even SG$5 combined.
Good think my hand made clay magnets look really nice.

That's all folks. I will include the names of the palaces and the markets when I do my detailed posts. I am too brain dead now to be coherent. Just Saying.

Overrated Brunch @ Wild Honey

SINGAPORE SERIES

I love breakfast food, but since i am not really a morning person, I refer to breakfast food eaten anytime of the day other than in the morning, as brunch.

I love brunch. It's even more comforting when you're suffering from jet lag because you can just go to a nice cozy cafe at 5pm and enjoy breakfast food. It magically gives any day a weekend feel as it brings back memories of sleeping in late, then having a lazy brunch with family or friends on the balcony.

I flew in past midnight the day before yesterday from Australia, and with all the unpacking I had to do, I didn't manage to see my bed until 3am. Jet lag woke me up at 9am with a splitting head ache, so after making sure I cleared my inbox of anything that might possibly explode in my face, I dragged myself back to bed until Tim woke me up in the afternoon and we had to go out to hunt for food as it's normally not available in my home after a long trip, and even more so when Sofia's nanny is not here to take care of us.

We decided we wanted to try Wild Honey, a brunch place in Mandarin Gallery that I've heard mixed reviews about.

tagline not seen in pic which I felt was apt:
No place like home
If you arrive at 5pm, there are no queues and service is fast
The place is cozy.
We chose to sit on a couch beside each other, observing the whole place from our table.
You need to go to the counter to place your order and pay.
They have a chalkboard (no pics allowed) and iPad menu.
They also have a magazine wall with current international mags.
Vogue Paris (mars 2012) and my first cup of coffee at 5pm cappuccino was heaven

Tunisian: Sizzling pan of stewed tomatoes with Chorizo and fried eggs
SG$18++ (Php613++)
Sweet Morning: Grilled Mango filled french toast with mascarpone and berry compote

We asked them to recommend their best savoury and best sweet dish. There food looks so much nicer than it tastes. If that's the best they have to offer, I don't want to try the rest. Just Saying.

I think it was weird that for a breakfast place, they did not even serve butter.
You need to ask for it.
Butter and sea salt made everything taste better. But it was still very ordinary.
Just Saying,
They had a strawberry cake I wanted to try.
You could help yourself to chocolate easter eggs.
Thanks for brunch Tim!!!

Overall, I liked the place, but I would never come back because I was craving for the food. Our bill for two mains and one coffee was $49++. I think that's too much to pay for food that's normal at best (I mean, how can you disaster brunch right?!). I would probably come back if I wanted to have coffee and read Vogue Paris, and maybe try the cake. Just Saying.

The Shopping Lottery at ALDI

I know ALDI as the famous hard discount chain from Germany. I have visited an ALDI store in Hamburg, as well as the ALDI in Saint-Ouen in Paris, because it was quite near the office where I worked for six glorious months of my life.

The only thing I remember about ALDI is that if you see something you like, you need to buy it immediately, because chances are it won't be there when you come back for it. I wasn't really planning on shopping in ALDI on this trip, but out of curiosity, I dragged my aunt to check it out. We went to the branch in St. Mary's closest to her home.

I bought so much stuff that I that did not even know or I probably DON'T that I needed.

Silicone brownie pans in PURPLE!!!
I only wanted to buy one, but it looked so good with the pink one I had to buy both.
AU$3.99 each (SG$5.35 or Php182)
Pizza Pan with holes to make the crust crisp for my mom
AU$2.99 each (SG$4 or Php 136)
Disposable Champagne Flutes for Tim's Weekend Wagyu Dinners
I could not resist getting the Violet Boots for Fif.
I'm sure it will come in handy when we go to London, if it still fits when we finally live in Paris,
or maybe we can just go to Japan for a food trip!
AU$7.99 each (SG$9.35 or Php 319)
My aunt got Sofia a tray of Chocolate Easter Eggs
They go really well with the crackers I got her and the egg coloring kit.

I was so happy with my loot from Aldi... until I realized that I saw a Milk Frother for AU$24.99 (SG$33.30) which I forgot all about when I went back for more Pizza Pans. It looked so much like the Nespresso Milk Frother that I wanted but cost SG$200 at that price, I didn't want it!!! So I googled it and I found out that Aldi has recently launched it's own version of the Nespresso machine and it's dirt cheap (AU$79.90 or just a little bit more than SG$100).

I'm so tempted to buy it but I have managed to convince myself that there are many reasons why I DON'T need one.
1. I have a Nespresso Machine.
2. I don't want to worry about sourcing the capsules that are around the same price, but you get 16 capsules, some flavors come with milk just like the Dolce Gusto capsules no idea about the quality though.
3. I have a Nespresso Machine.

Hahaha... so that solves it, but I still wanted the Milk Frother though. There are mixed reviews online. Some people are really happy with the coffee machine at that price, but some also are very unhappy with it compared to the Nespresso. I was very mature about it. I decided that I was only going to go back for it before I left, if I have enough cash to pay for it, because then, it would be like getting it for free. If it's still available in ALDI that is. If it's not, then maybe it's just not meant to be. I have a SG$2 milk frother from Daiso anyway.

Pink Milk Frother from Daiso SG$2

The milk frother was meant to be mine. I had no more time to go back to Aldi because I finished my work early and rebooked my flight a few days earlier than planned, but my friend passed Aldi to buy it for me! Yay... Thanks Pami!

Expressi Milk Frother (Aldi Exclusive) AU$24.99 (SG$33 or Php1,121)
a similar one from Nespresso is SG$199!!!
The gel pens in the background are another last minute buy from Costco for Sofia
50 Gel Pens in a Metal Case AU$13.39 (SG$17.60 or Php600)
