Angus and Foie Gras Donburi by Tanuki Raw

If you're looking for a good lunch, what won't break the bank, head over to Tanuki Raw.

They have lunch set meals where you can score an Angus Short Rib Yakiniku with Foie Gras and an Onsen Egg for SGD19.90.

Egg Porn

They also had a Matcha Salted Egg Cake that you could
add on to a meal for a discounted price.

Of course I couldn't resist, so I ate all the salted egg bits
and some cake. Quite good.

I also saw rave reviews about their rolls, so note to self, the next time I come back, I need to bring someone to share my food with. Thank you Jackie for the reco! Please join me next time. just saying.

New Ubin Seafood is ironically one of the best Steak and Foie Gras places I've tried in Singapore

One of the things I like about flying with Singapore Airlines, aside from the service that they are known for, is they still have magazines available for passengers to read while flying. I am not referring to SilverKris, the official travel magazine of Singapore Airlines, but real magazines available in the magazine rack normally near the toilets. This is where I update myself on Simply Her, Her World, Reader's Digest, Time Out, etc on all the magazines I used to read when I lived in Singapore. I find that it's a good way to discover new places to try.

Sure enough, on one of my last flights to Singapore, I came across an article in Time Out on a place with really great Steak and Foie Gras, which ironically is a Seafood Place, New Ubin Seafood, in an industrial area near Maymount MRT. I was so intrigued, I immediately convinced Tim we had to try it.

I arrived quite late from my meeting in KL, so I went directly from the airport. Tim called ahead to make reservations and pre-order the foie gras for me. You need to pre-order to make sure they have it when you plan to go, because clearly foie gras is a fast selling item in a seafood restaurant. Go figure.

The place is a bit in the middle of nowhere, but there's a big billboard
to show you the way.
The place is open air, so bring a fan if you're not used to the humid
Singapore weather.
Half of the recommendations are meat! Hahaha.
There were two versions of foie gras, Satay and with
Poached Egg, so we ordered both to try.
The US Black Angus Rib Eye Steak comes with onions, wedges...
SG$12/100g (cuts come in 500-700gms)
and rice that was cooked in the beef fat! Yummy.
We ordered the steak medium well and it was cooked just right.
Mom talking to Sof and Ninong Tim on his telecon.
This is what I call a good dinner.
Steak + Steak Rice + Foie Gras 2 ways
Foie Gras Satay SG$7/stick (minimum order 2 sticks)
Goes so well when eaten with the steak, yeah, and the
steak rice too.
The Foie Gras Egg Cup Special (with Truffle Salt) SG$9 was also good,
but I think it's better eaten as a starter.

New Ubin had a promo too, just like their page on Facebook, and your
lime juice is free! Each person with a Facebook account can avail. Hahaha.
We did! Thanks New Ubin!
New Ubin Seafood is definitely more than just Seafood.
place. Next time I come back, I should figure
out what Ang Ka Hei is since I love everything Salted Egg too.

Fat Cow used to be my favorite Steak and Foie Gras place in Singapore, you can read about that place here. I think New Ubin can give them a run for their money, minus the ambiance of course. just saying.

Akira Back for Modern Japanese Food in Jakarta

I've only had one meal in Jakarta, and it was so good, I have no idea how to top in on my next trips. But then, I've always loved a challenge, so I am going to enjoy finding a new place to top it. Hahaha.

I've visited Jakarta twice now, but it's normally just for transit and the schedule is so tight, I barely have enough time to touch the wonderful breakfast spread at The Hotel Mulia, where I normally stay.

Fortunately or unfortunately, on my last trip, I had to stay an extra night because of the flight schedules, so I got a chance to go out for dinner and catch-up with Didi, and she found a wonderful restaurant where we had dinner.
Akira Back, it turns out, is the name of a chef from Las Vegas, who just
recently opened a restaurant named after him in Jakarta.
Akira Back is currently number 2 on Tripadvisor (I've been told).
The food is quite pricey, but just reading the menu is enough to make
you drool. Hello Foie Gras, Fatty Tuna (which we didn't order), and Steak.
For a place with posh prices, the ambiance was quite casual.
The place has an open kitchen (which you can see behind the busy table).
It's also located on a high floor of MD Place Building,so if you're lucky,
you'll get to enjoy a nice view too. See far window of room at the back.

At first we weren't sure if the dishes were for sharing, so we just ordered everything we wanted, mostly appetizers, and a main course to share.
Didi ordered Salmon to show Noel. Hihihi.
So sweet. I didn't touch this.
Then we had the Pan Seared Foie Gras with Croquettes and miso and honey
sauce. Quite a busy plate but everything worked well together.

Dishes are definitely meant for sharing.
This was my portion of the Foie Gras. Yumyumyum..
We ordered one of the safe rolls with tempura which we saw from another
table. Unfortunately, they served it way after we demolished the main course.
We also tried the Grilled Octopus with Chorizo Dumplings because we weren't
sure if the food we ordered was enough.
This was good too... though it was the most ordinary among the rest.
For our main, we ordered the steak to share. It looks horrible, but it tastes so
much better than it looks. Perfectly cooked, and melts in your mouth.
Dessert was really a pleasant surprise though,
We ordered the Yuzu Cheesecake with Berry Ice Cream.
Not only does it look beautiful, it was light and delicious too!
A perfect end to our really yummy dinner.

Be ready to pay roughly 900,000 Rupiahs per person though, and we weren't even drinking wine! But I must say, it was truly a great meal! Thanks for this great find Didi!!! Can't wait to catch up again. Hope our next meal is as good as this without being as expensive. Hahaha. just saying.

Au Petit Sud Ouest for the best Foie Gras Meal in Paris

I love foie gras. So what better way to start the season of eating, than with an ode to foie gras, and where to have it - not just as a starter, but as a really great meal, in Paris.

When I went to Paris, I think I probably had Foie Gras in some form at least once every day. That's how much I love it. But when I was researching where to have the best Foie Gras, a place that came up many times, was Au Petit Sud Ouest.
In addition to being famous for Foie Gras, they are known to have toasters,
on each table, so you can heat your own bread as required.

Reservations are required for Au Petit Sud Ouest, in fact, while I was there, I overheard them turn away several walk-ins and I also heard them on the phone apologizing for not having any more tables available for the same night.
The Restaurant is very near the Tour Eiffel, I arrived
earlier than my reservation, so I opted to have an overpriced
Cappuccino at the Cafe across the street instead.

When I arrived, I gave them my name and told them I had a reservation, so I was told to wait a bit, then I was finally seated.
I was given a table near the entrance, across the deli,
that's why I overheard them turning away a lot of people.
They have a deli where you can buy Foie Gras to bring home if you're unable
to get a table, or if you just to bring home some more after your meal.

You can also refer to the above pictures to see what the restaurant looks and feels like since I was trying to blend in (like a local), and not stand out looking like a tourist by taking pics of everything. Hahaha.
Though I may have given myself away, when I asked for the English menu.
I normally survive ordering in French, but for something as important as Foie Gras,
I didn't want to order the wrong thing by mistake.

The place is decorated with a lot of duck accents.

Since they had two of my indugent favorites, I opted to order the Pan-fried Foie Gras with truffle sauce.
Foie Gras x Fresh Truffle = LOVE
The serving was easily 4 or 5 times what you'd get when you order
Pan Seared Foie Gras from a restaurant in Manila.
It went so well too with the freshly toasted bread.
Heavenly...

The only catch though was that I was travelling alone. So after I finished half the serving (1 slice), I really started feeling drunk...
and I just had water!!!
I started googling on my phone - on whether eating too much Foie Gras can kill you, or cause a heart attack, but my search yielded nothing except how bad it is (for the ducks or the goose) when you eat foie gras because they're force fed and all that stuff...
So since, I couldn't really ask them to doggy bag this for me, and not be judged,
I ate it anyway. Hahaha. Sure felt like I would never eat foie gras this year.
But I still did...
I couldn't let those force fed animals die in vain, right?
At least, this way, they died to feed a really happy me.

Since I wasn't sure if I would be full enough if I just ate the Foie Gras (note to readers, if you're not sharing... yes! you will be full enough), and I also didn't want to be judged for making a reservation, and just ordering a started, I ordered a salad as well.

I was deciding between the Goat Cheese or the Mushroom salad, and my server told me it would be better to have the mushroom salad as the goat cheese would be too rich. I guess, she didn't want to have to bring me to the ER from over indulgence. Hahaha.
The mushroom salad was huge!
I think I just ate most of the mushrooms, because I was so full.
My bill was a very reasonable at less than 35Euros!

That was really the BEST Foie Gras Meal I've ever had... and I can't wait to have in again in February! just saying.
