The Art of the Brick Lego Exhibit

When we were planning activities for our weekend in Singapore, Sofia's godfather Tim sent us an article about the Lego artist, Nathan Sawaya's exhibit at the Art Science Museum in Marina Bay Sands. We immediately added it to our MUST DO LIST, making our weekend a Lego Weekend.

Entrance to The Art of the Brick exhibit is SG$15 (Php505) for foreigners,
but only SG$13 (Php 440) if you live in Singapore.

Despite the playful medium, Nathan managed to come up with some serious works of art. So maybe that's the attorney in him... and what made him famous. Hahaha.

This is called Hands because
his biggest nightmare was losing his hands.
3 weeks to create using 15,136 bricks.
The Swimmer is my favorite piece.
15 days to create using 10,980 bricks.
Face Mask is Nathan's self-portrait.
More than 1 month to create using 10,770 bricks.
Yellow is one of his best known pieces.
It was made in 2006 with 11,014 pieces.

There are also interactive areas in the exhibit.

This is a frame of 3D raindrops.
Visitors can try to recreate.

Nathan has also used recycled bricks donated for some of his works like Peace and Love.

Peaces used 3,720 recycled bricks.
Open Heart used 1,856 recycled bricks.
The Peaces display has a window for taking pictures.
If you use it, you get this cool angle.

The Blue Guy Sitting is funny because they really include an empty chair beside him beckoning for visitors to sit down with a similar pose.
He was created with 21,754 bricks.

Here are some other pieces I liked:

An Artist's View uses 11,561 bricks.
Different colored Lego people with shaped heads.
Nathan also does portraits.
I think this is Courtney, his partner.
They had a Brickture Booth,
but you need real money for this so we didn't use it.
We made do with the iPad App booth instead.
Sofia's and My Lego Portraits.
We now have this app on our iPad.
Lego Portrait is Free in the app store.
At the end of the exhibit, they have an  Art Science Museum in Lego.
Ninong Tim and Ninang Ady were patiently waiting
while we made our way back to Sofia's favorite exhibits.
Can you imagine a Natural History Museum in Lego?
This part had a shadow puppet theater.
The pencil that's taller than me.
There's a part where kids get to practice making a design.
Back at the end,
you get go for some Lego Reflexology.
I hate stepping on Lego,
so you can't convince me to do this.
We were waiting in the interactive kids area for
the Arts and Crafts session to start.
This is the coolest Museum Trail for kids ever.
I just don't get why they give it at the end of the exhibit.
You need to go back to figure the answers out.
It turns into a giant pencil!

It was finally time for the Arts and Crafts session.
The medium was still lego.
This time, they used the bricks as stamps. Genius!
The other materials.
The instructor was teaching the kids how to make a self portrait.
They provided mirrors.
and asked the kids to draw and decorate what they see.
Sofia's self-portrait work in progress.
The price you pay for art is dirty fingers.
Sofia proudly holding her work.
A closer look.
Ninong was patiently waiting for us with his new friends.

You can still catch the exhibit if you are planning a trip to Singapore in the next few months.

The Art of the Brick exhibit is on until 14th April.
No wonder Yellow is well-known,
he's the guy in the posters!
Lego is love. just saying.
