Favelas from Afar in Rio de Janeiro



Travel Bite: Favelas in Brazil, are the slum areas, which has been stereotyped in films as areas ruled by drug traffickers and organized crime groups called milicias, while in reality Pacifying Police Units have taken an active role in these communities.

There are several Favela tours you can find online if you want a closer look, but from the neighborhood of Ipanema and Copacobana, you can actually see Cantagalo favela which is located on a nearby hill.
