Art Garden 2012 at the SAM

SINGAPORE SERIES

It's International Museum Day (IMD) today! I didn't even know there was such a thing, but because it fell on a Friday, Singapore museums are celebrating it tomorrow, 19th May with free admission to some of the museums. They also celebrate Children's Season here and this year it will be held from 18th May to 24th June where a lot of the museums are having an Open House weekend with lots of kids activities planned. You can check the list of museums participating in IMD and Children's Season 2012 here.

When I first read about it, I saw that the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) was doing the Art Garden again. We really loved the Art Garden when we visited it last year and I immediately remembered that entrance is free to the SAM every Friday night from 6:00pm until closing time. It's the perfect after school activity to end the week, especially if your little one loves museums as much as mine does, so guess where we went today...

This felt like deja vu!
Dancing Flowers with Auntie Yuki in 2011.
At the SAM lawn with Walter the bunny.
He was always under repair last year, I guess they finally managed to patch all the holes.
Walter and Fif up close.
Sofia and Yaya by the SAM hallway 2012.
Fif and mom at SAM 2011
Then we were told that the Art Garden is actually at SAM at 8Q this year.
You can see the solar powered dancing flowers from the street.
It's the extension of SAM at 8 Queen St.

The first exhibit we saw was the silent forest by a Japanese artist.
You need to wear booties to protect the art.
This is quite a change from our winter booties.
Sofia in the forest.
This was the Ping Pong go-round. I guess more than doubles can play!
SAM at 8Q is in front of the Church of St. Peter and Paul.

There were a lot of hands-on activities for kids.

There's an area where you can make a magnet with clay and everyday things

You just need to show your ticket or donate SG$0.50 (if you came in for free).
Kami lang nagdonate! You mean everyone else bought tickets?
Fif working on her clay magnet.
The finished product.

There was also an activity room next door where no donations were necessary.

Stencil and glitter.
Coloring...
Stamping...
Fif was in arts and crafts heaven.
Artwalk along the stairs.
Sofia in front of the Reactive Wall where the pictures react to any sound made on the mike.
There was a dancing room where they video you dance to the music.
We backed out of this.
Then they project in on the wall in a collage.
The art of imagination display.
Sofif running around...
Hmmmm... today!!!
See? things really tell me to buy them.
Too bad i'm not into boxes.
In the activity area, you get to leave your mark on any box
(you can even improve on an already decorated one).
Fi's work.
This is her version of a Pizza. Pang Museum of Modern Art ito!!!
The artist and her work.
They recycled the display on the life-size dolls you can dress up.
Fif was stumped on why the boy heads looked like girls.
She found an acceptable one.
Dressing up the girl now.
Girl Power!
Even the cake is recycled. But it looks dead na in places.
This display is called 5QUID.
I know it looks like a squid... but if I were still in London, it would just mean 5bucks!
There was a glow in the dark garden.
You can make origami flowers and leaves to add to the garden.
Pasaway si yaya. She made it a bird instead of a flower.
This was the mark we left on Art Garden 2012.

Sofia enjoyed a lot and says she wants us to go back. I enjoyed the fact that we went on the first day and there were no crowds at all. I can just imagine that all the activities will be full on open house weekends, but I think the Art Garden at SAM last year was better. I like the SAM more than it's extension and my favorite activity last year was the design and make your own giant mosaic.

You had to make a design, then pick out the correct number of chips.
Getting our chips ready.
You follow your pattern by playing giant pachinco!
The end result.

When Sofia saw me blogging, she asked me to take her to this museum again and I had to explain to her that's where we just came from... she liked last year better too!!!

Tomorrow we're going to celebrate IMD by visiting the Asian Civilizations Museum and the Philatelic Museum... then we're going to have Foie Gras tonkatsu somewhere in between.

I saw this at a Japanese Restaurant in Liang Court
and it jumped right at the top of our to do list this weekend...
Because i absolutely love everything foie gras! Just Saying.
